Since the mid-20th century, plastic products have become an indispensable material in modern life due to their unique performance advantages. These characteristics are primarily reflected in the following aspects:

First, plastic products are lightweight and highly strong. Compared to traditional materials like metal and wood, plastics have a lower density and are therefore lighter, yet through various synthesis processes, they can achieve higher levels of strength and toughness, making them suitable for applications in packaging, construction, automotive manufacturing, and other fields. For example, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) are commonly used to make lightweight and durable containers and daily necessities.

Second, plastic products are highly corrosion-resistant, resisting attack by a variety of chemicals, including acids, alkalis, and salts. Consequently, they are widely used in the chemical and medical industries. For example, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, commonly known as "Teflon") is commonly used in non-stick coatings for cookware and laboratory ware due to its excellent chemical stability.

Furthermore, plastic products offer flexible processing and are highly malleable. Through processes such as injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion, plastics can be formed into products of various shapes and sizes to meet the needs of diverse industries. From precision electronic components to large-scale piping systems, plastics offer efficient solutions.

Plastics also possess excellent insulating properties, making them a crucial material in the electrical and electronics industries. For example, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polycarbonate (PC) are commonly used in the insulation of wires and cables and in the protective casings of electronic products.

However, plastics also present environmental challenges due to their resistance to degradation, and large amounts of discarded plastics pose long-term ecological risks. Therefore, biodegradable plastics and recycling technologies are currently a research priority.

Overall, plastics, with their lightweight, durable, and easy-to-process characteristics, play an important role in modern society. However, their environmental challenges must be addressed through technological innovation and rational use.
